Washer hose leakage- The hoses behind your washer should be replaced every 3-5 years due to ware and tear, which can cause leakage in your home. You may also want to carefully choose where you put your washer. Try and have it as low in the house as possible (basement or first floor), if your washer is on the second floor or above, any leak can cause massive amounts of damage to floors and ceilings below.
Frozen pipes- We all know that water freezes at 32 degrees, but the temperature of the most outer wall can be much colder than where you are standing inside the house. Try and keep your house heat above 55 degrees to avoid frozen pipes.
You may want to consider adding a leak detection system in your home to alert you when there may be a leak. These can cost anywhere from $40 to $400 depending on the system, but $40 compared to the cost of a water claim (can be up to $160,000) is a no brainer!
